The Ohio State city of Maumee has a population of just under 15,000 and is located in Lucas County. It developed along the banks of the Maumee River and lies about 16 kilometres south-west of Toledo. The track held its inaugural meeting in 1902 on the Lucas County Fairgrounds, although at that time it was known as Fort Miami Fairgrounds. It was innovative and pioneering, becoming the first racecourse in the country to make use of floodlights, designed and installed by Toledo Edison Company, to facilitate night harness racing in 1929. Towards the end of the 1956 season the Ohio Racing Commission began to look closely at the business operations of Ralph Parachek, the boss of track operators Toledo Turf Club Inc. In 1958 the track was renamed Maumee Downs, but it was to survive for just 3 more years, its demise due to increased competition. The gates closed for the final time in 1961. Today the site of the former racecourse is covered by the Lucas County Recreation Centre. |
